Becoming a mother has been the most transformative process of my life.

Collaborative story project 📚

I had the special opportunity to share an activity with 4 girls (including my own daughter) ages 6-9 at the Colibri alternative school on the exotic island of Ometepe in Nicaragua 🌋🌴🌅

Each child took turns co-creating a short story by using 7-10 words in a sentence and building upon each other’s concepts.

They then practiced drafting the sentences in English and Spanish before making the final version with artwork 📝🖍️

We did a phonics lesson when coming up with the title and the cover art was done collaboratively in papercraft ✂️

The girls presented the story to the parents at the end of the year holiday gathering 🎄🕯️✨

A highly engaging and fun way to incorporate reading, writing and arts & crafts into one activity and a simple example of project-based learning, this is a great one to try with homeschooling friends or recommend to your child’s teacher if they’re open to ideas 💡

I grew up in a poignantly Polish household where Christmas was an intense orchestration of curated decorations, family gatherings, gift-giving, elaborate traditional meals served in fine china and crystal followed by midnight mass in a perfume-and-leather-infused church so packed we’d have to stand in the stairwells if we didn’t arrive early. As a kid, I loved it, despite my deep lamention the year I got a Sega instead of a Nintendo (how could Saint Nick make that grave mistake?!). But I do remember the toll it took on my mother, whom I became suspicious of from an early age when ‘Santa’ just happened to leave the gifts under the tree while I was changing for Christmas Eve dinner after my mother’s oddly stern insistence. The traditionally pescadarian dinner (pickled herring, anyone?) would officially commence when we could spot the first star in the sky (an activity I revelled in) and we always left an extra table setting (for Jesus). (⅔ continued from previous post) After moving across the country to the Vancouver Island outback with Brett, Christmas became a time of rest from my busy December work schedule at the salon. As a former subscriber to Adbusters (a period I call ‘my angry 20’s’), I resented the commercialization of the holiday and participated in ‘Buy Nothing Day’ as an antidote to Black Friday (Cyber Monday didn’t yet exist but no doubt I would have found the concept enraging). In further protest, Brett and I started a tradition of going to a box store and buying the best (and often biggest) television to indulge in HD action adventure movies, only to return it 2 weeks later. A future shopper would get an open-box deal, we reasoned.

I would take a break from cooking and splurge on a variety of fine foods that only required serving (or at most, re-heating) to conserve energy. We had a no-gift policy. There was a period in the early years where I would work my second job serving food and drink to (mostly) merry strangers. Fast forward to parenthood. My youngest sister, who had by then moved to the West Coast for school, started joining us on her break; another impetus to be more festive. We put up some simple decorations, cooked a few special dishes (a variation of dumplings and lasagna became the tradition) and assembled glorius snack platters. We finally caved and bought a TV once and for all - a boxing day special. To avoid being total gluttons, we drove up the mountain to ski the nordic track, as had become tradition.

When Asha was 2 years old, we got a small, potted Juniper tree; an environmentally-friendly nod to Yuletide that would later be planted on our land. Before she woke up that Christmas morning, Brett gave in to the guilt induced by his gift-laden childhood and rushed out to Walmart (a chain we used to boycott after watching the documentary ‘Wal-Mart - High Cost of Low Price’) to buy her a few token gifts. (⅔ continued from previous post) After moving across the country to the Vancouver Island outback with Brett, Christmas became a time of rest from my busy December work schedule at the salon. As a former subscriber to Adbusters (a period I call ‘my angry 20’s’), I resented the commercialization of the holiday and participated in ‘Buy Nothing Day’ as an antidote to Black Friday (Cyber Monday didn’t yet exist but no doubt I would have found the concept enraging). In further protest, Brett and I started a tradition of going to a box store and buying the best (and often biggest) television to indulge in HD action adventure movies, only to return it 2 weeks later. A future shopper would get an open-box deal, we reasoned.

I would take a break from cooking and splurge on a variety of fine foods that only required serving (or at most, re-heating) to conserve energy. We had a no-gift policy. There was a period in the early years where I would work my second job serving food and drink to (mostly) merry strangers. Fast forward to parenthood. My youngest sister, who had by then moved to the West Coast for school, started joining us on her break; another impetus to be more festive. We put up some simple decorations, cooked a few special dishes (a variation of dumplings and lasagna became the tradition) and assembled glorius snack platters. We finally caved and bought a TV once and for all - a boxing day special. To avoid being total gluttons, we drove up the mountain to ski the nordic track, as had become tradition.

When Asha was 2 years old, we got a small, potted Juniper tree; an environmentally-friendly nod to Yuletide that would later be planted on our land. Before she woke up that Christmas morning, Brett gave in to the guilt induced by his gift-laden childhood and rushed out to Walmart (a chain we used to boycott after watching the documentary ‘Wal-Mart - High Cost of Low Price’) to buy her a few token gifts. Consisting of puzzles that were suitable for a much older age, her complete disinterest was amusing to watch. (continued in next post)

(3/3 continued from previous post) The following year, Asha was beginning to pick up on the concept of Santa. Not wanting to spoil the magic I once enjoyed, I wrote a letter ‘from Santa’ asking her to be his little helper. Instead of receiving a gift, she was asked to donate from her ever-increasing supply of toys (courtesy of grandparents) that would go to children in need (like orphans in Manila). We wrapped her chosen toys and left them under the tree for Santa to collect. When they were gone the next day and another letter from Santa appeared - a thank you note for her contribution to his grand, global effort - Asha was absolutely thrilled. This, my friends, is what I call a Christmas parenting hack.

This year, however, Asha is 6 and not interested in being Santa’s helper, offering the role to her little brother instead. Since we’ve gone nomadic over the last few years, I suspect our minimal lifestyle has likely influenced this choice. Not wanting to have more stuffies taking up precious real estate, I told her Santa would only bring what her parents sign off on and suggested an alternative: chocolate. She is satisfied with this (as am I) and thus the labour of the whole ordeal is lessened. We will spend Christmas at the beach this year, eating homemade ceviche with friends and playing in the Baja surf.

This holiday, like anything in life, is what you make of it. I invite you to let go of the guilt, anxiety and expectations so you can be more present with your loved ones and enjoy a gentle break - a holy daze - that all parents, I’m sure, could use.
